Moser, Erika (1 April 2022). Ein ‘feu sacré’ für werktätige Nächstenliebe. Christkatholische Frauendiakonie im Armuts- und Fürsorgediskurs während der Entwicklung des schweizerischen Sozialstaats (1878-1966) (Unpublished). In the late 19th century, church-based women's associations enabled middle-class women to engage in recognized public activities. Religious values motivated women to act against poverty. Church women's deaconry gave rise to institutions that were taken up by the emerging welfare state.
Articles, obituaries, lectures and religious writings maintained the women's religiously based motivation for their activities. In terms of content, the media products emphasized above all that charitable activity corresponded to the nature of women and was thus an appropriate form of lived religiosity. The fact that the women thus worked publicly and built up their own charitable organizations received less explicit recognition and thus receded into the background. Thus, the importance of church women's organizations as preforms of state institutions remained undervalued. Accordingly, little is known about their history, developments, and networks. Also, their contribution to the moral dimension in the process of the emergence of welfare state institutions has hardly been examined so far. In the project, these questions are addressed using the example of Swiss Old Catholic charitable women's organizations. To this end, first, the history of Swiss Old Catholic women's deaconry and its protagonists will be traced. Secondly, it will be examined how media products and the diaconal institutions themselves brought up the view on gender and morality in Swiss Old Catholic women's deaconry.
