Spanish as a heritage language has received relatively little attention in Switzerland.
One of the main reasons for this is that Spanish heritage language courses are not funded by the Swiss cantons, and, in the case of Spanish courses for children with Latin American1 roots, they are supported by the parents themselves. In addition, the few studies that have been carried out in Spanish focus primarily on the acquisition and development of bilingual skills without addressing questions of language identity or linguistic ideologies.
To address this gap, this chapter focuses on the values that Latin Americans
living in the canton of Berne assign to Spanish as a heritage language and the
linguistic ideologies that motivate them, as well as considering how these values
influence language transmission.
