Recent events at the University of Frankfurt have reignited the debate on the importance of being mindful of our language as researchers and educators in a public university, and the need for self-reflection on our roles. Despite the student body being more diverse in terms of gender, race, sexual orientation, social class, neuro-diversities, and (dis)ability, this diversity is not reflected among faculty members. This can lead to challenges that we need to continually reflect upon if we want to take our roles as educators seriously. In this presentation, I will reflect on strategies to ensure that the teaching environment is a safe space for everyone, and emphasize the importance of accountability and self-reflection within the university setting, and when speaking with the wider public.
