Schmeck, K; Schlüter-Müller, S; Kaess, M (10 July 2023). Two-Year Follow-up of Early Intervention in Young People with Borderline Personality Disorder (Unpublished). In: IEPA's 14th International Conference on Early Intervention in Mental Health. Lausanne, Switzerland. 10.07.-12.07.2023.

Aims: The evidence base for approaches focused on early intervention in young people with BPD is limited, especially concerning the long-term course of the disorder following treatment. In the EAST Study we compared the effectiveness of the newly developed approach Adolescent Identity Treatment (AIT) with Dialectic Behavior Therapy for Adolescents (DBT-A) in improving psychosocial and personality functioning. Methods: In a controlled clinical study 60 patients (mean age 15.8 y., 93% female) with full or subthreshold BPD were treated with 25 sessions of AIT (N=23) or DBT-A (N=37). Primary outcome was psychosocial functioning (CGAS) at 1-year-follow-up. Secondary outcomes were BPD symptomatology, personality functioning, non-suicidal self-injurious (NSSI) behavior and depression. In the statistical analysis, we conducted both Intention-to-treat (ITT) and Per-Protocol (PP) analyses. Patients were followed up until 2 years after the beginning of treatment. Results: Both approaches showed large treatment effects that changed the personal, psychopathological and psychosocial situation of the adolescents substantially. In both treatments, psychosocial functioning was significantly improved with large effect sizes at both 1-year and 2-year follow-up. Borderline symptomatology as well as NSSI significantly decreased in both AIT and DBT-A, and in AIT personality functioning and depression improved significantly. Conclusion: The effects of early intervention in adolescent BPD patients remained stable over a period of two years.
