(Request a copy)This work-in-progress examines the results of algorithm audits of YouTube search and recommendation algorithms in relation to Holocaust- and COVID-related misinformation. By simulating the activity of users located in Switzerland, it examines the outputs of the YouTube search in response to conspiratorial and non-conspiratorial queries as well as YouTube recommendations under the condition that the user does or does not watch content containing misinformation. While doing so, the study scrutinises the effects of search personas - i.e. sequences of browsing actions - on algorithms' performance and investigates how such performance changes over time. The preliminary findings indicate the limited impact of search personas for YouTube search; in the case of recommendation algorithms, however, there is higher variation in outputs which can be possibly attributed to personalisation. Additionally, the preliminary findings highlight a higher presence of content promoting misinformation for the COVID queries as well as substantial variation in the presence of debunking content per query.
