The article describes how in 1873 a diocese was created for those opponents against the First Vatican Council who called themselves "Old Catholics". It focuses on the election of the first Old Catholic bishop (J.H. Reinkens) by clergy and people, and on the search for a bishop who would consecreate the bishop elect. The search led to Armenian Catholics (united with Rome) and to the Old Catholic Church of Utrecht.
