The marginalization of Güntherianism in 19th century Roman Catholicism: the case of Johannes Baptista Baltzer (1803-1871)

Berlis, Angela (2023). The marginalization of Güntherianism in 19th century Roman Catholicism: the case of Johannes Baptista Baltzer (1803-1871) (Unpublished). In: Ecclesiastical History Society, Summer Meeting 2023: Margins and Peripheries. University of Warwick, United Kingdom. 18. – 20. Juli 2023, 20. Juli 2023.

The ultramontanisation of the Roman Catholic Church in the 19th century is a well researched phenomenon, as is the official process against the philosophy of the Vienna scholar Anton Günther whose works were put on the index in 1857. This process makes visible the castle mentality of ultramontane Catholicism against modernity. The correspondence between Johannes Baptista Baltzer (1803-1871), professor of dogmatic theology in Breslau, and a Benedictine monk in Rome, which was made only recently accessible, makes visible the next phase of this process of marginalization of a whole stream within 19th century Catholicism: Now the ecclesial persecution of adherents of Günther took place. Baltzer, once defender of Günther in Rome, from the late 1850s onwards became prosecuted. He was the first case of the withdrawal of a permit to teach (“missio canonica”) by Rome, his works were put on the index, his income reduced. The correspondence shows how the process of marginalization took place in daily life through local media, estrangement and putting aside. The contribution deals with personal aspects of marginalization, but also with the political effects of a mentality opposing to modernity. The case study shows the paradox effect that the new centre now for almost 100 years became the new periphery.
