Article 104a lit. d of the Swiss Federal Constitution1 requires the Swiss Confederation to provide for “cross-border trade relations that contribute to the sustainable development of the agriculture and food sector”. This requirement is part of Art. 104a of the Swiss Constitution, a provision designed to ensure an adequate food supply for the country’s population that was approved in a 2017 referendum.
So far, Art. 104a lit. d has only marginally been fleshed out with content. With a view to supporting sustainable and diversified food systems domestically and worldwide through cross-border trade relations, this book presents a concrete proposal for a ‘Federal Act on Sustainable Trade in Agriculture’ (Bundesgesetz über nachhaltigen Agrarhandel).
