Which hermeneutics of the Old Testament is expressed in the liturgy as an essential point of reference of Old Catholic theology? This question is examined in this paper in three steps: First, the liturgical framing of Old Testament reading, epistle reading, and gospel reading in a Swiss Old Catholic liturgy is analyzed. Second, a quantitative evaluation looks at which Old Testament books are used in the Old Catholic lectionary, and how frequently. And third, texts from the Christkatholisches Gebet- und Gesangbuch (CG I) are considered to work out which hermeneutics of Old Testament texts as a whole are expressed here. The results of these investigations are discussed in exchange with approaches from other denominations, mainly Roman Catholic. The contribution shows that Old Testament texts in the Swiss Old Catholic reading order are understood primarily as “prophecy” and as promises of Jesus Christ, and that readings from prophetic books, especially from Isaiah and Jeremiah, dominate.
