With a backdrop to Europe’s early myths and the early modern Geistlichen Spielen, Romantisch Tragödien recycle successful motifs and forms to bring sanctity into appearance. Werner’s play Wanda. Königin der Sarmarten. Eine romantische Tragödie mit Gesang in fünf Akten was staged multiple times 1808 in Weimar as a public favorite. As “freudig Opferlamm”, the virgin queen Wanda disappears into the river after she stabbed her lover to death. In the effective play, the pagan ritual of sacrifice becomes a powerfully poetic and theatrical motif and one of the most essential tools to shape the plot and to finalize dramatic action.
