In this paper I reflected on the role of eunuchs in pre-modern Islamicate Societies, applying the analytical concept of "asymmetrical dependency”, developed by The Bonn Center for Slavery and Dependency Studies. After an introduction on the Fatimid empire, I presented an overview on eunuchs in pre-modern Islamicate societies, before focusing on the role of eunuchs in the Fatimid Empire (909-1171), and specifically on the role of one specific eunuch, Ja‘far, who grow up together with the first Fatimid imam-caliph al-Mahdī.
