In this article we examine whether early childcare and education impacts children's subsequent school careers and how this relates to expected lifetime earnings and, consequently, to long-term economy-wide benefits. Our study is based on data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP) and covers children born between 1990 and 1995. The analysis focuses on the effect of early childcare attendance on subsequent assignment to different school tracks, depending on social origin and migration background of the children. Based on these estimates we then derive the expected education-mediated impact of early preschool and childcare experiences on future life earnings, garnering an impression of the long-term economic consequences. Our study shows that, controlling for relevant confounders, attending early childcare increases a child's probability of being assigned to "Gymnasium" by about 14 percentage points. This effect corresponds to an increase in expected lifetime earnings of about 27 000 Euro. A comparison of the discounted present value of these returns to the average costs of early childcare (8 000 Euro) reveals a cost-benefit ratio of 1 to 2.7. (DIPF/Orig.).
