Cardiac assist devices are used for patients with terminal cardiac failure and cardiac shock. The therapeutic aims are to bridge the time either to transplantation or for recovery of the heart. This article reports on the acute death of a 69-year-old man who received a left ventricular cardiac assist device 2 years before death with which he lived quite well for 2 years. He died suddenly from an acute myocardial infarction confirmed by laboratory parameters while the cardiac device was still functioning.
