In 1866, the Roman Catholic Church historian Joseph Hubert Reinkens published one of the first historical-critical studies on Martin of Tours, in which he dealt with aspects of Martin’s episcopal leadership. In 1873 Reinkens became the first bishop for the Old Catholics in Germany. This article describes the significant impact of his reception of Martin of Tours on Reinkens’s understanding of episcopacy and his own episcopal ministry.
