Under oxygen deficit the bulrush rhizome produces increased amounts of ethanol and lactic acid and shows a smaller increase in the level of glycerol. The tissue is able to release ethanol and lactic acid into the environment. It seems that under nitrogen gassing glycolysis and the partially inhibited TeA-cycle are the only possibilities for ATP·synthesis to maintain a reduced metabolism. Under these conditions the synthesis of maltose is more favourable than the energy consuming sucrose synthesis and may be a transport substance between the rhizomes and the developing parts of the plant.
