Starting from doubts on whether the large increase in publications in the past few years has produced substantial insights for sport psychology, the question emerges of how the quality of research is judged and ensured. The quantitative measures currently used to judge the quality of journals or articles are questioned since they mainly refl ect the attention an article is able to grab. From a constructivist position, the peer-review procedure has some shortcomings. The problems become manifest if the quality of researchers has to be judged. In order to allow young academics to focus more on quality instead of participating in the contest for quantity, the criteria should be changed and, more specifically, the number of publications to be considered in evaluations should be strictly limited.
