This article discusses acronyms, which refer to terrorist organizations. Acronyms are categorized as a subtype of short words and hence as products of word formation. They carry specific functional features such as economic, emblematic and creative labelling techniques as well as text structuring characterics. Furthermore, the following presents empirical findings on „AQ**“ (with reference to suborganizations of Al-Qaida) and „IS**“ (Islamic State with various alternative names). These organization acronyms form a very prolific type of discoursive and semiotic instruments.
