This article examines the 1429 prosecution against the Jews of Trévoux, a small city at the borders of the kingdom of France, the Holy Empire and Savoy. This investigation led to the unexpected discovery of a copy of Toledot Yeshu (TY), the Jewish ‘Life of Jesus’. The study of the documents pertain to the investigation, preserved in ms. lat 12722 of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, open a remarkable window on the circulation and transmission of TY in the late middle ages, a period for which we possess no Hebrew manuscript evidence. A French translation of the text was in fact included by the commissioners within a list of blasphemous and heretical conclusions found in the books of the Jews. This article discusses the circumstances and the context of this little studied case and shows that the documents preserved in ms. lat 12722 are in fact original documents, written or transcribed in the context of the inquiry itself. It also compares the Middle French translation of TY conserved within these documents with the extent Hebrew tradition in order to shed light on the history of TY in the late middle ages. The article thus includes a transcription and annotated translation of the Middle French text, which constitutes one of the earliest witness to the well-known Strasbourg version of TY, first edited by S. Krauss in his 1902 monograph, Das Leben Jesu nach jüdischen Quellen.
