Full text not available from this repository.The following paper deals with the influence of language contact and syllable structure on word formation. It focuses on the different influences on word formation in language contact, as shown by suffix formation in Swiss German. The best known interference in language contact is that on the lexical level: Loanwords. Besides this, suffixes and word formation patterns can also be borrowed: For example the collective suffix -ere in Swiss German, a loan suffix from the Latin suffix -āria. Finally, borrowings are also possible on the phonetic-phonological level: Language contact can have effects on the syllable structure of languages: The large amount of different diminutive suffixes in Swiss German can be explained in this way.
