While women did indeed participate in the Old Catholic movement after the First Vatican Council (1870), as actors they remained almost completely unnoticed for a long time. Until just a few decades ago, it was customary to refer to the Old Catholic “fathers”; the Old Catholic “mothers” have increasingly started to come into focus only in the past 25 years. This is not just a question of historiography. As will be demonstrated during the presentation, it is also connected to the fact that in the 19th century, and indeed in the Old Catholic movement, the term “laity” (in German “Laie” – “layman”) was a gendered reality. Women had to seize the term as well as the position of “layperson” – which they did by founding women’s organisations and, in 1912, a Germany-wide umbrella association – and to claim the lay identity (and all associated rights) for themselves. While Old Catholic women championed the equality of women as laypersons until about 1965 and also claimed liturgic competence for themselves, starting in the 1970s, their commitment grew to include an active advocacy for including women in ordained ministry.
