Berlis, Angela (2016). Der Historiker Constantin von Höfler im Spiegel seiner Briefe an Ignaz von Döllinger und Ludwig von Pastor. Internationale kirchliche Zeitschrift IKZ, 106(2), pp. 76-105. Stämpfli
Full text not available from this repository. The correspondence between Constantin von Höfler and Ignaz von Döllinger lasted 40 years (1849–1889), the correspondence between Höfler’s wife Isabella and Döllinger lasted more than two decades (1849–1871). In his letters, Höfler describes details of his life as a historian in Bamberg and Prague, his scientific preoccupation with Jan Hus and his conflict with Czech historian František Palacký (1798–1876), which was part of an escalating dispute between Czech and German nationalities in Prague in the second half of the 19th century. Questions regarding development of and politics within the Church – especially surrounding the First Vatican Council – also play a part. Starting in the mid-1870s, Höfler also corresponded with the rising Roman Catholic church historian Ludwig Freiherr von Pastor (1854–1928), with whom he shared, among other things, his critical position vis-à-vis Döllinger. The correspondence between Döllinger and Höfler reflects the development of their close-quarters relationship (both men were professors in Munich until 1847 and frequented the same social circles) into a long-distance friendship, as well as their growing estrangement as a consequence of their divergent ecclesiastical points of view following the First Vatican Council.
