Comparing Sociosexual Orientation in Matched Groups of Heterosexual and Homosexual Men

Waldis, Lea; Borter, Natalie; Rammsayer, Thomas (11 November 2019). Comparing Sociosexual Orientation in Matched Groups of Heterosexual and Homosexual Men (Unpublished). In: 16th Conference of the Swiss Psychological Society (SPS SGP SSP) - "Psychology’s Contribution to Society”. Bern. 09.09.-11.09.2019.

Sociosexual orientation reflects individual differences in willingness to engage in uncommitted sexual relations. Comparisons of sociosexual orientation of heterosexual and homosexual men could be hampered by person variables that differ systematically between these two groups. To achieve a high level of cross-sample validity, the present study applied a modification of the Nearest Neighbor Matching procedure: 282 heterosexual and 282 homosexual men were matched for possible confounding variables such as educational level, religiosity, age, and relationship status. Structural equation modeling revealed less restricted sociosexual behavior and stronger desire for uncommitted sexual relationships in homosexual compared to heterosexual men. By applying this matching approach, the sensitivity of our study design was substantially enhanced. This enabled us to detect differences in sociosexual desire, that did not become visible in earlier studies with no rigorous control for potential confounding variables.
