Pichelmann, Stefan; Rammsayer, Thomas (11 September 2019). The effect of digit value and covered area on perceived duration (Unpublished). In: 16th Conference of the Swiss Psychological Society (SPS SGP SSP) - "Psychology’s Contribution to Society”. Bern. 09.09.-11.09.2019.
Previous studies demonstrated that higher numerical digit values (8, 9) lead to longer perceived durations than lower values (1, 2). Little is known whether the effect can be generalized to the entire digit range or verbal digits (i.e., number words). To answer this question, 120 participants completed a time reproduction task with either numerical digits ‘1’ to ‘9’ or verbal digits ‘eins’ (one) to ‘neun’ (nine). For both digit types, a statistically significant logarithmic relationship between ascending digit value and longer perceived duration was established across the entire digit range. Moreover, verbal digits’ perceived duration was even stronger influenced by the covered area of verbal digits with larger areas leading to longer perceived durations. These results suggest two unique sources of variance for the bias in perceived duration: Digit value, which was the major influence for numerical digits, and covered area, which primarily affected the perceived duration of verbal digits.
