This contribution examines the biosphere reserve (BR) concept of Germany, Austria and Switzerland in the light of paradigmatic development and future challenges caught between regional development and global sustainability. The development of Europe’s nature conservation policy and its impact on the BR policy of these three countries can be broken down into the paradigms of segregated conservation, integrative conservation and holistic conservation, which have appeared chronologically since the 1960s. The article examines these paradigms and discusses how this paradigmatic development has been reflected in reality to this day. Among other things, it emerged that all three countries face major future challenges for the implementation of the required holistic under-standing of conservation, especially since the discussed BRs may at best show tentative approaches to implementation.
