The narrative structure of Boccaccio’s ‘Decameron’and its rhetorical reflection about narration are well in line with the Horatian dictum of prodesse et delectare. Against this backdrop Boccaccio developed his concept of novellare, which comprises on the one hand ‘re-telling’, but on the other hand explores a new anatomy of narrating, which becomes evident in particular in Boccaccio’s poetical practice. Stolz ana- lyses in this chapter the effects of the intradiegetic tension of ‘dressing’and ‘nakedness’ on a didactic layer. For this purpose the chapter researches the use of the traditional metaphor for poetry of the ‘beautiful dress’ in the Griselda-story and its reception in Petrarca’s translation of the novella in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.
