In this paper, we present new perspectives arising from the development of the rich music notation encoding scheme of the Music Encoding Initiative (MEI) together with the development of the open source engraving tool Verovio. The tool distinguishes itself by its rendering design that provides applications with a unique interaction layer. This makes it and MEI a formidable pair, that enables a complete rethinking of music interaction and linking. Not only can the interaction be bi-directional, but additional representation dimensions can be added to the music notation. In this context, we analyze existing projects that illustrate how this common interaction ecosystem is currently used and how it can be the appropriate basis for the development of semantic applications in the future.
