The 17th-Century French travel books offer a reflection on the evolution of the image of the Portuguese empire in France. The French East India Company was founded in 1664. When French merchants first reached the Indian Ocean, they had little information about the Indian area and the characteristics of trade. The Portuguese experience that travelers transcribe offers a critical view of the Portuguese administration of the Indian territories, but also a basis for reflection for French imperialism.
