This chapter focuses on martial contests (competitive activities involving the handling of weapons) in the city of Solothurn in the fifteenth and sixteenth century. The case study demonstrates how martial displays are connected with associations of citizens and networks of urban competitors, and how they play an essential role within the formation of town identity and of ‘martial ethic’, as coined by Ann Tlusty. It examines fencing and shooting contests based on regulations and documents from the city authorities. It then shows where and how they took place in urban spaces. Finally, it showcases a few examples of its preserved material culture.
