The battles of Gallipoli as they are known in Europe, the Pacific and South Asia or the battles of Çannakkale as they are known in modern Turkey were a seminal campaign for many nations, not because it was decisive for the course of the war but because it came to play a central role in regard to the memory of the First World War. Based on an analysis of records from the National Archives of Australia in Canberra, the Canberra Times newspaper and publications of the National Capital Planning Authority, this chapter will analyse the role of the Gallipoli / Canakkale battles in Canberra’s city planning and Architecture of Memory in the period between the formal founding of the city and its centenary in 2013
