Die jüngste Zunahme öffentlich zugänglicher virtueller Globen ermöglichte Internetnutzern den freien Zugang zur Visualisierung bestimmter geografischer Standorte auf bisher nicht realisierbare (mögliche) Weise. Die Erstellung von Virtual-Globe-Programmen wie Google Earth und NASAs World Wind wirkt sich auf Reisen, Forschung, Freizeit und Bildung aus (Schoning et al., 2008), während gleichzeitig Bedenken hinsichtlich des Datenschutzes und des Überangebots an Technologie geäußert werden.
