Although some have assigned the term “World War” to earlier wars such as the French Wars of 1792–1815, this article deals with the first World War of the 20th century, which took place between 1914 and 1918. To contemporaries it was known as “The Great War”. The article first tries to situate World War I in World History, before turning to the protagonists, the main features of the war, the course of events, the peace settlement and the War Guilt Debate. It also contains a table giving an overview over the course of events in different geographic areas.
