Combining discourse analysis and autoethnography in Montréal, this paper provides an anthropological study of sexual violence in Contact Improvisation. The author first discusses the assumption of Contact Improvisation as a “gender revolution” by investigating the embodiment of gender roles within gestures and movements. Secondly, she explores the emergence of boundary crossing issues, reflecting on the entanglement between a dance and an erotic caress. Third, the discourse analysis of women’s testimonies highlights power mechanisms within dance relationships. Drawing on Bourdieu and Foucault, the author sheds light on the asymmetry between dancers’ status and the issue of consent.
