Since 2019, an international team jointly led by the Universities of Bern, Oxford and Thessaloniki is researching submerged settlements in Albania, Greece and Northern Macedonia. Together with local partners of the Southern Balkans the research is conducted in the framework of the project ‘Exploring the dynamics and causes of prehistoric land use change in the cradle of European farming’ (EXPLO, 2019– 2025). The ambitious project design is based on a close interdisciplinary collaboration between archaeologists, palaeoecologists and archaeobiologists. The geographical situation of the Southern Balkans region is quite similar to that of the Alpine foothills: large and small lakes are embedded in a mountainous environment with peaks that reach heights of around 2600m above sea level. In contrast to the Alpine region, the Southeast European lakeside settlements were almost unexplored. Currently archaeological and archaeobiological investigations in eight terrestrial wetland sites and sites under water are ongoing. The research is focused on settlements spanning over 5000 years between 5600 and 500 BC. The establishment of a robust dendrochronology for the region is one of the archaeological goals of the EXPLO project. Parallel to the on-site investigations, the palaeoecological off-site investigations aim at the long-term reconstruction of vegetation, climate and human impact in the Holocene. The EXPLO project is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the grant agreement No 810586 (www.exploproject.eu).
