In latin, stabulum refers to some kind of transitionary dwelling and habitation, a place of rest and resupply for men and horses. During the early times, stabulum was a roman settlement where the Empire's cavalry could stop before continuing its way to the chosen destination.
This latin spelling later evolved into Stabio, the name of the small village where I spent my childhood and adolescence. For many centuries Stabio and its surroundings essentially hosted rural activities, the land being devoted to a mixture of agriculture and pastures. Since the 1950s, however, due to its strategic position on the Swiss / Italian border and to the presence of an important transport network, much of Stabio's territory progressively began to be covered by a rapidly growing complex of industrial infrastructures.
This ongoing project is a conceived as a long-term study of Stabio's surroundings. The first step of the project, that began in 2018, rely solely on the use of self-processed black and white analog photographies. The second step has been the production of an analogue audiovisual piece that has been presented in September 2021 as a loop installation in the exhibition PERSISTENZE, La Rada Locarno (https://larada.ch/18-09-21-16-10-21-persistenze/)
