Due to its innovative design, the longitudinal mixed methods study PICE (Parental Investment in Children's Education) allows to gain new insights into the dynamics between parents and children in transition processes from compulsory school to initial training and the labour market. Families with a migration history are contrasted with Swiss families and the focus is on young people who, despite having fewer family resources, have experienced successful educational careers (at least for a restricted period). In this respect, PICE complements the TREE study (Transitions to Initial Education and Employment) with a qualitative in-depth study drawing on selected young adults and their parents. In this paper, the study is described methodologically, its aim and design as well as its implementation are presented, then some strengths and challenges are discussed.
