Arabic was the main language in the Palestinian geographic area until the establishment of the State of Israel. Today it is the mother tongue and national language of the indigenous Palestinian citizens of Israel (who comprise about one-fifth of the Israeli population) and it is a community language among Mizrahi Jews coming from Arabic speaking countries. Arabic is legally recognised as an official language in Israel. As a matter of fact, Israel is a multicultural State. Nevertheless, it operates essentially as a monolingual country. Since 1948, the changing socio-economic and political circumstances caused the hybridisation of Arabic and the decline of its ethno-linguistic vitality. Due to the impossibility to be completely integrated in a State that defines itself as a Jewish State and because of the separation from their compatriots living in Gaza, the West Bank or abroad, Palestinians in Israel live a situation of identity awkwardness. The paper analyses the status of Arabic language in Israel from a sociolinguistic perspective and it focuses on individual and collective linguistic strategies used by Palestinians to find assimilation with the Israeli Jewish majority or, on the contrary, to resist judaization.
