Typhus epidemic in Basel in the 19th century

Zihlmann, Patricia (25 May 2023). Typhus epidemic in Basel in the 19th century (Unpublished). In: Congress of the International Society of Travel Medicine 18 (CISTM). Kongresszentrum Basel. 21.–25. Mai 2023.

The lecture presents after a short introduction in the historical context
1. the course of a typhus epidemic in Basel in 1814, when coalition troops of the European monarchies were accomodated in the town during the war against napoleonic France,
2. the measures taken by the government,
3. coping strategies such as prayers or writing e.g. diaries.

The presentation shows further that the epidemic was also used by the authorities for Christian disciplining, for repressive measures against marginalized groups and for promoting academic educated physicians (to the disadvantage of non-academic medicine).
Finally the epidemic supported changes, that are noticeable in administrative matters as well as in burial practices. Indeed the prohibition of burials within churches was the kick-off for the moving of the cemeteries at the periphery of the city, which process was finished by the establishment of the Hörnli cemetery in 1932.
