Written one hundred years after the publication of Römische Adelsparteien und Adelsfamilien, the present paper sets out to reconsider Friedrich Münzer’s historical vision. Münzer did not analyse Roman politics merely from a prosopographical perspective that narrowly focused on partisan struggles. On the contrary, he put forward a more complex interpretation of the historical development of Republican Rome and its aristocracy, keenly sensitive to ideological, social, and even ‘policy-related’ aspects. In this paper, I intend, firstly, to identify and explain the centres of gravity of Münzer’s analysis; secondly, to reconsider the definition of the arcana imperii of the Roman aristocracy and point out the aspects that reveal a more structured and deeper interpretation of the levers of power of the Roman Republic by Münzer
