The article compares two methods to study the links between educational pathways and income, or more generally, a previous trajectory and a later life outcome. First, sequence analysis provides a holistic view on trajectories by creating a typology, but it can fail to account for key trajectories’ characteristics explaining the outcome. We develop a new method to validate an SA typology overcoming this limit. Feature extraction and selection method aims to identify these key characteristics directly and is found to be more efficient, but the information can be overwhelming.
