The oral history interview gives voice to the dancer and choreographer Fabienne Berger, a leading figure in the early days of contemporary dance in Switzerland and still active today. She has followed a fragmented path through dance. As a child, she spent an important period of time in Australia, and later became involved in left-wing and feminist political activism in Switzerland. Decisive experiences eventually led her to the United States to study dance and somatic practices as an autodidact. On her return to Lausanne, she started as a choreographer and founded her own company in 1985. The interview focuses on her self-reflection of her background and her position as a choreographer on a still developing Swiss scene. It is part of a collection of oral history interviews conducted at the University of Bern for a research project on autobiographical sources. For publication, the interview was shortened and edited by the authors.
