We investigate the determiner son- ‘so a’, the result of a univerbation process of so and ein ‘a, an’, with plural nouns in German. We first investigate the functions of son- in five different regional language corpora and then examine differences in the use of son- depending on region, age, and situation. The corpus analysis shows son- is more common with singular than with plural nouns and collocates with a wider range of singular nouns. We then zoom in on the functions of son- with plural nouns. We find that it occurs most often with the identifying and recognitional functions. The second analysis shows son- with plural nouns is disappearing in West Central German, while there are still traces in eastern northern Germany, even in modes of speech close to the standard language.
