In this chapter we analyze, from a sociolinguistic perspective and using ethnographic methods, the discourses that circulate about Spanish as a heritage language (HL) in the Latin American School of Berne (LSB), a complementary Spanish language school located in the city of Berne (Switzerland) that has been in existence for more than twenty years. In particular, we examine
discourses on identity, distinction and profit, discursive products of the national linguistic ideology, the ideology of the standard and linguistic instrumentalist ideologies of late capitalism. With this study we aim to fill a gap in discursive research on HL in Switzerland and in Europe in general. We believe that research on HL discourses circulating in institutions such as complementary schools helps to understand the reasons why parents cultivate HL in the host countries, as well as their hierarchies and the macro-socio-political and economic motivations
behind them.
