Ephebes and Maidens as Objects of Love in Arabic literature: Origins and Developments of the Theme in the Classical and Postclassical Production

Magliozzi, Aurora (3 May 2023). Ephebes and Maidens as Objects of Love in Arabic literature: Origins and Developments of the Theme in the Classical and Postclassical Production (Unpublished). In: Doktoratskolloquium Islamwissenschaft – Basel / Bern / Zürich.

In this presentation I introduced my PhD project. I began by outlining the work’s objectives and main research goals, followed by an explanation of the methodology employed. Finally, I presented the expected results of the research.

To provide a deeper understanding of my research, I focused on two primary sources: (1) Mufāḫarat al-ǧawārī wa’l-ġilmān by al-Ǧāḥiẓ (9th century) and Rušd Al-Labīb Ilā Muʻāšarat Al-Ḥabīb by Ibn-Falīta al-Yamanī (14th century). Through a selection of passages from the two texts, I illustrated how the homoerotic theme, specifically pederasty, evolves over time.

In particular, I examinated the shift in argumentation favoring young boys within the debate between boys and girls. This analysis revealed significant changes in the portrayal of this theme between a classical text and a postclassical one.
