Moretti, Bruno (1998). Il ruolo del francese nel recupero del dialetto in Ticino da parte di "parlanti evanescenti". Rivista Italiana di Dialettologia, 22, pp. 115-124. CLUEB
Full text not available from this repository. In recent years the dialect in the Canton Ticino has notably lost many potential speakers and many former domains. For many people, Italian is now the first and only (Italo-romance) language spoken, whereas their competence of dialect remains mainly passive (although appearing already in early childhood). The author of this article proposes to call these persons parlanti evanescenti (fading speakers) because on the one hand they are the cause and the consequence of a weakening of the dialect (and of its partial disappearence), but on the other hand their competence in this language can easily be reactivated, sometimes up to a native-like level. In this article special attention is given to the discussion of the unexpected role of the French language in the reconstitution of dialectal (and sometimes pseudo-dialectal) structures by the fading speakers.
