Perhaps due to the lack of conceptualization of prolonged, complicated or persistent grief (bereavement) disorder there is no definite terminology. However, there is consent of the phenomenon that grief can persist over the culturally expected norms, and that grief reaction even can become more intense. The symptoms however are not distinguishable from intensive grief reaction. ln the article, mechanisms are described that maintain and even intensify these reactions. ln addition, symptoms of prolonged grief as well as risk-factors are described. In terms of psychological intervention specific principles and psychological impact factors have been evaluated. Grief is a natural reaction following the toss of a loved one (e.g. partner, child). ln so far, the mentioned principles can also be applied on persistent problems related to separation of still living persons.
