Palynostratigraphic investigations on the so-called "Zell lignite-complex" from a profile taken in the gravel pit close to Zell (Swiss plateau) revealed a pollen sequence, which can be connected with the long pollen sequences of the lignite area of Gondiswil/Ufhusen (Wegmüller 1992). The Zell lignite-complex corresponds with the transition period from the end of the last interglacial (Riss/Würm) to the Early Wurm. This period was characterized by phases with strong erosion and accumulation. The Lower "Zeller Schotter" were deposited during the Riss Glacial and partially at the beginning of the last interglacial. The "Upper Zeller Schotter" probably date to the phases of sedimentation in Middle Würm.
