Manometric studies of detached sections of roots and rhizomes show that there is a progressive reduction in oxygen consumption as the concentration falls below 10 mg· 1−1. In detached roots there is no increase in carbon dioxide output under nitrogen while in rhizomes the carbon dioxide output falls under nitrogen as compared with air, suggesting either an economy of substrate utilisation or else a fixation of carbon dioxide, or the production of some alternative substance to ethanol as an end product of glycolysis. Levels of ATP remain high under nitrogen provided the temperature does not fall below 25 °C. An alternative, cyanide resistant terminal oxidase pathway is present but is probably inoperative when the organs are rooted in mud. The economy of oxygen utilisation at low concentrations together with the control of carbon dioxide production under nitrogen and the maintenance of high ATP levels suggests that this species possesses a number of metabolic properties which aid survival under periods of anaerobiosis.
