In Savognin (Grisons, Switzerland) a skiing-area of 30 hectares (altitude: 1200-1800 metres)
has been prepared with artificial snow every winter since 1978.
The present study shows that artificial snowing leads to lasting changes in oligotrophic habitats. Plants tolerant of dry, low-nutrient conditions disappear, giving way to more common mesophilous and nitrophilous species. Loss of species-diversity and banalisation of the vegetation are the results.
This is interpreted as the effect of a synergism of three different factors on artificial snow sites: 1. increased water supply, 2. increased nutrient input and 3. retardment in vegetation development.
This leads to the conclusion that oligotrophic habitats should not be covered with artificial snow.
