Two bioindication-methods based on tree-inhabiting lichens were developed in the Biel area and tested at numerous immission measuring stations in the Swiss Basin.
The calibrated lichen indication method has been adjusted with different important, technically measured immission data in Biel and Basin. This method allows quantitative conclusions concerning overall atmospheric pollution. The calibrated lichen indication method was used to establish a total immission inventory with five pollution levels for the entire Biel area.
By means of multi-element analyses, Passive Biomonitoring with the folious lichen Hypogymia physodes allows quantitative and qualitative conclusions about the composition and amount of important active pollutants. These pollutants accumulate easily on Hypogymia physodes.
Together, these two bioindication methods constitute an integrated biological system of measurement that can be used to formulate detailed Statements about general atmospheric pollution and individual pollutants.
