This paper aims to trace the process of colonization and frontier settlement in the Province of Sandia (Puno, Peru) and consider it as a case-study of how ideas of social progress and development were constructed and propagated by the Catholic Church. Based on archival documents collected in Peru, this paper argues that the frontier environment was discursively constructed as a ‘promised land’, describing a pioneer space which accommodated settler communities that had not only spatially abandoned the altiplano, but also the religious and social heritage from the highlands.
